New Year's Weight Loss: 6 Tips

It is a time-honored tradition to make resolutions at this time of year. If your resolution is to lose weight - and keep it off, then keep reading! Here are six simple tips that will have you losing weight in a balanced and healthy way.

1. Lose weight with water.
Water is essential for everybody - it is also the key to losing weight. If you haven't been drinking enough water, your body has developed a pattern of storing water. This water retention equals extra unwanted weight.

By drinking more water, you are not only flushing out toxins, you are also teaching your body that it no longer needs to store water. Drink at least 60 ounces of water (about 8 glasses) a day. Boil water and sliced lemons, and drink this throughout the day to help with fluid retention. If you are still not sold on the merits of water, try this on for size: water is a natural appetite suppressant.

2. Soup up your weight loss program.
A simple dietary change will have you shedding pounds: eat a bowl of soup at least once a day. Nutritious, low-salt soups will nourish you as they flush waste from your body. People who eat a serving of soup daily lose more weight than those who eat the same amount of calories but don't eat soup. Go for homemade soup whenever possible, as canned soups are loaded with salt and chemicals.

3. Eat early to keep weight off.
The human body follows a circadian rhythm, which means that the same foods eaten at breakfast and lunch are processed differently than when eaten at dinner. Studies show that when you eat your daily protein and fat at breakfast you tend to lose weight and have more energy; however, eating the same things at dinner tend to increase tendencies toward weight gain. I suggest that you eat your last meal of the day by 7 p.m.

4. Eat smaller meals, more frequently.
Follow an eating schedule with five little meals every day. Eating steadily through the day keeps you from becoming famished and overeating at your next meal. Make a low-fat trail mix from raw almonds, pumpkin seeds, dried plum, and apples and have it available at all times to avoid the tempting lure of high-calorie snacks.

5. Adopt a balanced approach to your diet.
Most of the fad diet programs out there nowadays are extreme in a few recommended foods, or else deprive the body of food altogether. This works in opposition to our metabolism and the results usually don't last, producing a yoyo effect that depresses your metabolic function - not to mention your self-esteem. We are natural beings that need a balance of nutrition from all sources.

Your diet should consist of a balance of organic sources of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Instead of white rice and pasta, opt for brown rice, bulgur, millet, or buckwheat.

Eat more green, chlorophyll-rich foods such as broccoli, kale, spinach, and asparagus. Eliminate candy, sugar, soda, and all simple sugars from your diet. Excess sugar ends up being stored as fat in your body, which results in weight gain. Also, keep dairy to a minimum because most dairy products are high in saturated fat. Avoid fatty foods, processed or fried foods.

6. Walk off the weight.
The No. 1 cause of weight gain is inactivity. Physical activity is the key to speeding up your metabolism and burning excess calories. The best way to be physically active is to use your legs! Walk as often and as long as you can. Always take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Step outside during your break at work and take a walk around your building. Consider joining a local hiking club. Try taking a walk 30 minutes in the morning or 30 minutes in the early evening.

I hope this article helps you shed some pounds and add on the years! I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!

Six Weight Loss Tricks

The most basic approach to weight loss is to burn more calories than you take in, but sometimes no matter what you do it just doesn’t seem to be working. When you need an ace up your sleeve for a critical moment, try one of these tricks to jump-start your weight loss.

Add weights to your routine.

Adding weight-lifting to your routine is one of the fastest ways to see results. Your body will respond almost immediately, shaping and toning muscle, and remember, the more muscle you have, the more fats you burn! To determine the weight you should start with, grab a 5-lb. dumbbell and do as many bicep curls as possible. If you can do more than ten reps comfortably, use a higher weight. On the other hand, if you can’t do more than eight repetitions without strain, try using a 3-lb. weight instead. For those of you already training with weights, go up to the next highest weight to see results. If you don’t have weights at your home, it is highly recommended that you invest in a set that ranges from three to ten pounds. These usually cost less than $30 and are well worth the investment.

Increase the intensity.

During your cardio workout routine, assess the intensity level to determine how hard you’re working. If you can carry on a conversation with ease while exercising, it’s time to boost the intensity. You can do that by taking deeper strides as you move and placing a greater demand on the muscles of the thighs and buttocks, which in turns burns more calories. The best way to gauge the intensity of a workout is to pretend to carry on a conversation. You should be able to speak in short sentences with a breath after each one. Never exercise to the point where you cannot talk.

Shake up your routine.

Despite being called a routine, your exercise program should keep you interested. Add different activities for variety and you not only maintain your concentration but also constantly challenge your body to meet new obstacles and developing more than just a few muscles. More muscles equal a greater calorie burn – what’s not to love? Try new activities that keep your mind engaged and experience an extra boost for your brain!

Give your diet a makeover.

The daily diet is most frequently the worst problem area when you’re trying to lose weight. Between home and work and the responsibilities that come with each, it can be almost impossible to find healthy choices at the last minute. Spare yourself the daily scrounging and stock up on healthy foods that can be ready at a moment’s notice. Make a point to stash some of your good-for-you snacks at work so that when the mid-afternoon cravings hit, you have something satisfying and diet-friendly.

Challenge yourself.

Set personal goals for yourself and don’t forget to reward your accomplishment! If your goal is to be more active at work, buy a pedometer and challenge yourself to take 6,000 steps during your workday. Be creative about it: walk to a colleague’s desk rather than email, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and go to the bathroom three floors down instead of the one on your floor. Challenging yourself can be very fulfilling on a personal level when you achieve your goals, and can encourage you on to greater achievement.

Keep a food journal.

One of the most common characteristics of successful dieters is keeping a daily journal of food intake. There’s no real mystery about this: when you must write down everything that goes in your mouth, it forces you to realize exactly how many calories you consume. Keeping a journal is also beneficial because you can pick up patterns in your eating – for instance, if you become ravenous at a certain time everyday or if your meals and snacks are too far apart. It can also be helpful to note your frame of mind when you eat or mention the circumstances. Binging as soon as you get home from work could indicate a stressful job or it could mean it’s just been too long since lunch. A basic food journal requires you to enter the food you ate, number of calories, amount of fat, and how much you consumed. This can be expanded as much as necessary to meet individual needs. Just make sure you review it every few days to spot any habits that need to be brought under control.

Living with Your Diet

Recently, I was reading about a diet plan where you throw everything out of your pantry.

Although this sounds like great news for the supermarkets, over the short-term, this leaves very few choices for you to actually eat.

Can you exist on salad, topped with Flax seed oil dressing, for the rest of your life?

People believe that they must pay penance for their eating sins. Dietary and exercise torture seems to be good for the conscience and the prescription of the day.

How else can we explain "off the wall" diets and "extreme" exercise programs?

Whatever happened to eating in moderation and using common sense? Even if you are eating a "diet cookie," you can't have all you want.

If you travel, or eat in restaurants frequently, you have to eat in moderation, space your meals out, carry healthy snacks, or visit the salad bar at your local supermarket.
There are plenty of good choices, and it won't cost you an "arm and a leg."

When you eat, you shouldn't feel stuffed after a meal.
This slows down your digestive system, similar to the principle of a "log jam," and you may not eat for six hours or more, depending upon the amount of food consumed.

This is a time when your body is crying to go for a walk.
You should feel comfortably full every time you leave the table, and you should eat five or six times a day; three moderately-sized meals and at least two healthy snacks.

Sorry to say, diet cookies are rarely healthy. If they were of nutritional value, I would live on the Chocolate Chip Cookie Diet.

Now back to reality, if you love dessert, you can't give it up for life. Depending on the state your health, you may have to seriously cut back.

Therefore, consult with your family doctor, get a diet that makes sense, and please walk, swim, or exercise regularly.

Exercises for Weight Loss, Diabetes and Osteoporosis

By : Graeme Lanham
Many of our diseases are the result of a sedentary lifestyle as well as an unhealthy diet. Your body is meant to be used and will quickly deteriorate if it is not.
Physical activity should be a high priority in your daily program. Try to engage in some form of aerobic exercise at least five days a week and some form of resistance exercise at least two or three times a week. Here's why.

Aerobic exercise is essential for building stamina and cardio-respiratory fitness but you also need strength training.
The Australian Council on the Aging has listed the following benefits, based on medical research, of strength or resistance training:

1 Regain and retain muscle strength, no matter what your age.

2 Improve strength, balance, gait, flexibility and coordination, which in turn improves your ability to lift, walk, bend, climb stairs and enjoy life.

3 Is an effective method of preserving bone density and combating osteoporosis.

4 Is an effective strategy for fat loss and management of type 2 diabetes.

For the purpose of this article, I will focus on items three and four.

PRESERVING BONE DENSITY.

Osteoporosis is caused by the gradual loss of calcium from bones after the age of 35, when the bone building cycle changes and bones start to break down faster than they rebuild.
Osteoporosis is preventable and its progress can be halted even after calcium loss has started.

Dozens of studies show that weight bearing exercise, even something as simple as walking, actually strengthens your bones. Resistance training slows down the loss of bone mineral content thus reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Keeping your bones and muscles strong means you maintain functional strength for everyday activities. Loss of muscle and strength is a natural part of aging, but this will speed up with inadequate diet and lack of exercise.

To be fully effective your exercise should be combined with a bone building diet.
Your diet should include plenty of calcium rich foods. Good sources of calcium include tinned fish, green vegetables, sesame seeds and paste, oysters, almonds and baked beans.
If you take calcium supplements, it is important that you combine with magnesium and vitamin D. Magnesium helps keep calcium in the bones and vitamin D helps keep your bones strong. A major source is sunlight which enables your body to make vitamin D in your skin cells. This is crucial for calcium absorption.

FAT LOSS AND DIABETES MANAGEMENT.

Weight training has much to offer those who are overweight, due to the role of muscle in increasing metabolism. Muscle tissue is a huge user of your available energy supplies and will burn calories even when you are at rest. So the more lean muscle you are able to develop, the more fat you will burn even when you are not exercising.

Those with type 2 diabetes will benefit from resistance training. There is a strong correlation between obesity and insulin resistance, where the body develops an inability to metabolise sugar. Insulin resistance hinders the absorption of glucose from the bloodstream into human cells.

Never start a new treatment before consulting your doctor, especially if you are currently taking medication. The information published in this article is not intended as a substitute for personal medical advice from your physician or other qualified health-care practitioner. It is for information purposes only.

Magic plant for losing weight

By : Grigoriy Anoshenko
Though just recently made available to the general public, this botanical has been used by the native people of the Kalahari Desert, the San Bushmen, for quite some time. During extended hunting trips, these men would eat part of the juicy stem of the plant in an effort to ward off thirst and hunger, as well as for other ailments such as abdominal cramps, indigestion, hypertension, and diabetes.

Since hoodia is a relatively new on the weight-loss scene, there is not a substantial amount of published research available on its efficacy, but what is available is extremely promising. Scientists have isolated a number of particular compounds in the hoodia plant that work to suppress thirst and hunger. In particular, they have identified a molecule that they have name P57. P57 is steroidal glycoside, which is a chemical that reacts much like glucose in the body, but is substantially more active. Essentially this means that hoodia is 100,000 times faster and more effective at signaling the body that food has been consumed in an adequate amount. Once the P57 molecule triggers the signal that the body has been satiated, the hypothalamus then sends out its own signal to let the body know that it?s time to turn off the appetite. Fundamentally taking hoodia tricks the brain into telling the body that it is no longer hungry. In addition to all of this there are no known adverse side effects to taking hoodia.

Though this herb has so far proven to be highly effective, it is not easily or cheaply available to the general public. Since the plant itself needs about four or five years to mature, it is not a quickly replaced resource. This keeps the prices for this herb quite high, but so far research has shown that individuals who use hoodia reduce their caloric intake about 40 percent on average, so it seems well worth it.

Without the same stimulating and dangerous side effects that come with the now-banned ephedra, hoodia appears to be an excellent option for those looking to lose weight. Of course you should always check with your physician before beginning to use any kind of weight-loss supplement, hoodia seems to be a gentle and effective avenue to a thinner, healthier lifestyle and body.

Weight Training for Women

By : Beth Campbell
Women's weight training is becoming more popular. Men are not the only ones who weight train to develop a nice, muscular figure. As a matter of fact, the women do it as well as they too desire to look buff. Here are some safe ways the women do it.

Many times women, when wanting to work out, have been told that is was only something that men do. If they were not told that, then they were told that it was too much on the female body, and they would hurt themselves participating in such activities. Many women also have been led to believe that weight training will make them have huge masculine looking muscle which is another myth. Women have worked hard to prove these are all myths; thus, there are several websites, books, and training guides devoted to this topic.

Now, say a woman is starting weight training for the first time. What she must first do is look for a gym that is no more than fifteen minutes or so from her house. This is because if the gym is too far away, then she may not want to go. Secondly, she should make sure the gym has plenty of free weights. These are not dangerous for women but are perfectly healthy. Third, if the gym offers a free session with a personal trainer, she should take advantage of the offer and feel the trainer out to see if her needs for exercise needs can be effectively met. When talking to the trainer, she should ask many questions that will help her come to her determination of whether or not this would be the right person to train with, and she should make sure this trainer does not believe in the myths about weights concerning women. Women can lift heavy things and train just as the guys do.

Now, suppose that she does not want to always travel to a gym but would like to work out in her home. This is fine, too. The home gym should have a plenty of free weights as well as weight training equipment. She should look online for sites and books on the topic and make sure she understands how to do the weight training exercises correctly. Safety is also a factor so she should be sure to wear shoes in case of dropping the weight and when lifting heavy weights or lifting over her head, a partner is recommended so they can catch or spot the weight if she has difficulty with it. Should she want to work alongside a video that will walk her through the motions, these are available as well. Weight training for women does not have to be this big scary task that many have long since told them to avoid. Women can have fun, get in shape, and show the guys what they are made of!

How to Lose Weight With Self-Hypnosis

By : David Wells
elf hypnosis has become a very popular technique for weight loss. Many people at a dead end for weight loss solutions that work have learned that hypnosis can help them lose weight. With a bit of understanding about hypnosis and planning you can do the same thing that hypnotherapy can do for you at almost no cost. One of the first things to do is determine what you want to explore or accomplish with hypnosis. What are your self-betterment goals?

For some it may be to alleviate stress, anxiety or problems with self-confidence and self-esteem. For others, it may be eliminating bad habits or improper thoughts, cravings or binging behavior. The best way to do this is to write out your plan and then examine the approach that you want to take.

There are millions of dollars spent on weight loss products and services every year. Many people find themselves spending a lot of money without getting the result they were looking for. Self-hypnosis for weight loss is free, easy to learn and it works if you are diligent and work at it.

Before you begin self hypnosis you will want to determine what you want to suggest and the script you want to use while under hypnosis. Scripts can be developed alone or you can purchase a book with pre-written scripts. Here we will give a basic weight loss script that you can use.

1. Find a comfortable place in your home that you can relax where you won't be disturbed.

2. Find a point that you can focus on. Focus on this spot and repeat to yourself that you are feeling sleepy and your eyes are getting heavy. When you are ready, close your eyes.

3. Count to ten in your mind and imagine you are talking steps up a staircase to a peaceful place.

4. Once you reach your peaceful place begin to focus on repeating your memorized weight loss hypnosis script.

5. I am a beautiful person that will change my eating habits. Food has controlled my life for the last time. I will now consider cravings as a desire for water or exercise.

6. After you have completed your script you can wake back up by counting from 5 to 0.

Hypnosis is a truly successful therapy that can assist you with your weight loss goals. You will not get stuck in hypnosis and it is never dangerous. Take your time, practice and use as often as needed. Good luck!

Weight Loss: Is It Really All In The Mind?

By : Amin Motin
Can you really lose weight just by thinking about it?

And is it possible to change the way you think and lose weight - without doing anything else?

Scientists now seem to think you can. Researchers at Harvard have come to startling conclusions about the body-mind connection.

Just Think About It.

How many times has someone said that to you? More than once, I'll bet. But now it seems it's even better advice than ever. It seems an amazing discovery has been made by researchers at Harvard University investigating the science of weight loss.

A group of Psychologists studied 84 hotel cleaners, all of them involved in physical activity as part of their job. The group was split into two 'teams' and it seems that one group lost an average of two pounds and lowered their blood pressure somewhere in the region of 10 percent, while the other group had no noticeable changes.

There were no differences between the two groups prior to starting the research and none of them was on a diet, trying to lose weight.

If the successful group of 42 workers had been put on a new weight loss diet, the world right now would probably have bought millions of copies of that diet and every talk show host would be discussing how good it is.

If you're wondering what caused one group of half of the hotel cleaners to lose weight, you may be in for a bit of shock. The only difference between the two groups was that the successful group had been coached to believe that the jobs they were doing burned calories, made them healthier and helped them lose weight.

In other words the weight loss group were taught to believe what they were already doing anyway was going to have health benefits and the health benefits appeared, without any extra effort on their part. The chief researcher, Ellen Langer, claimed 'The changes were a function of the change in mindset alone'.

That phrase, 'The changes were a function of the change in mindset alone', is pretty important and we'll come back to it later.

She goes on to say 'If you can put the mind in a healthy place, you can have dramatic physiological consequences'. In other words you can lose weight, or improve your general health just by thinking about it the right way. That's an amazing statement and has implications for everyone who would like to enjoy vibrant good health.

'The changes were a function of the change in mindset alone'.

I said we'd come back to that phrase. What, exactly does it mean and in what way can it help you lose weight?

If you imagine yourself losing weight and burning up calories during normal daily activity, you will lose weight and bodyfat. That simple. No diets, no extra exercising, no magic weight loss pills or diet pills, no weight loss shakes, no meal replacements.

They didn't take Hoodia, or drink green tea.

It almost sounds too good to be true, but the researchers at Harvard have now proven that it's not.

For most people who have tried to lose weight and failed, it's only too easy to remember how difficult it was to stick to whatever you were doing to aid your weight loss.

But with the right mental conditioning you can support your weight loss goals and the Harvard research team has shown that it does make a difference what you think about. So choose to think the right things and you will see better results as your weight drops and your health increases.

Remember, the two groups were doing everything the same and neither group went on a diet, or tried weight loss pills. Imagine what positive benefits you could get from thinking the right way and following a sensible and healthy lifestyle?

So next time you see a slim friend who eats what they want and never puts weight on, they may just be thinking differently than you.

Which Diet is Best ?

By : Ken Black
We are lucky to live in an age when information is readily available to help us find a solution to almost any problem that we may be facing. Healthy weight loss is a perfect example of this. There are many weight loss programs that will suit almost any type of person and their lifestyle.

An important thing to consider when choosing the right program is to find one that educates you long term on how to lose weight and keep it off for good. Below are some of the most popular weight loss programs on the market today:

The Diabetes diet is not so much a diet as an education on what foods are healthy and what foods cause the diabetic to have an increase in glucose in the blood. Each person differs in the way that their body and metabolism burns up glucose, so the diabetic diet differs among those who use it. The Diabetic diet is less like a diet and more like a healthy weight loss program that can be used by anyone who wants to benefit from a healthier lifestyle.

The South Beach diet is known as one of the most popular, healthy weight loss diets of our time. A cardiologist named Dr Arthur Agatston, at a hospital in South Beach, created this diet. He originally developed the diet for patients who were overweight and had heart problems. Dr Agatston has been quoted as saying that the South Beach Diet is not a low carb eating plan or a low fat eating plan, but you can be assured that it is both healthy and really works.

The Nutri System Nourish Program works by controlling the foods that you eat, as well as your portions. There are a few good things about this diet. The first is that the food is already prepared and shipped right to your front door - healthy weight loss without the dishes, much like Jenny Craig. The other benefit of the NutriSystem Nourish Program is that it is very affordable, even if you are not a Hollywood star.

Barry Sears PhD created the Zone Diet and according to recent studies, it has been found to be the most successful diet from among such diets as the Atkins diet and other high carb, low fat diets. The diet itself is said to be quite tricky to understand and works on a formula of 40% carbs and 30% of both protein and fats, for every meal. If you can understand the Zone diet, you will have a great success rate from being on it.

The Atkins Diet has been around since the 70s when Dr. Robert Atkins wrote the book, The New Diet Revolution. This diet became very popular a few years ago, but that popularity is beginning to dwindle. The Atkins Diet works on the principal that you are allowed to eat proteins and fat, but must avoid eating carbs in your eating plan.

This particular way of eating has created a lot of controversy and the results have been mixed. It is said that the Atkins Diet is not for everyone, but research suggests that many people have achieved short-term weight loss from this diet.

Negative Calorie Diet Plan - this program is said to be a fad diet that is a thinly disguised low calorie diet. The Negative Calorie Diet works by eating foods that take more calories to digest than what they contain. There have been mixed results with the Negative Calorie Diet Plan, but, as a rule, many people have had a short-term weight loss solution on this diet.

The three-day diet claims that those using it will lose up to 10 pounds in 3 days by sticking to the meal plan for the three days. It is based on a very low calorie-eating plan. A low calorie plan can be of little use for shedding pounds if used over a longer period than three days because, after this time, your body will begin a starvation mode and slow down your metabolism. Because the diet is based on a low calorie-eating plan, you may also feel drained of energy and hungry. This may cause many people to stop using this eating plan.

There are many other weight loss programs or diets that can help you lose weight, however it is always best to check with your doctor first before changing your eating habits or taking any diet pills.

How to Lose 10 Pounds Or More Quickly and Safely

By : Ken Black
As reported in the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations recently published Calories Count - Report of the Working Group on Obesity, people who are overweight is a serious public health problem in the United States. Since the late 1980s, adult obesity has steadily and substantially increased in the United States. Today, 64 percent of all Americans weigh too much and over 30 percent are obese; in 1988 through 1992, fewer than 56 percent were overweight and fewer than 23 percent of American adults were obese.

The trends for children are even more worrisome. Recent research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 15 percent of children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 are overweight - double the rate of two decades ago. As Americans get heavier, their health suffers. Overweight and obesity increase the risk for coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. According to some estimates, at least 400,000 deaths each year may be attributed to obesity.

What people must know is that you can improve your health quickly with just a small amount of weight loss. We know that physical activity along with reduced calorie consumption can lead to the 5 to 10 percent weight loss necessary to achieve remission of the obesity-associated complications, says William Dietz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Most doctors agree, losing one to two pounds a week is safe and recommended by most doctors for most people. This breaks down to 250 to 1,000 calories per day. You can achieve this easily if you follow some or all of the following guidelines :

1. Use skim milk instead of whole milk or cream in your coffee.
2. Eat low fat yogurt instead of ice cream.
3. Eat more bright colored (green, yellow, orange, red) fruits and vegetables.
4. Eat more lean fish, chicken, or turkey and cut down on red meats.
5. Eat whole wheat or multigrain bread, instead of white bread.
6. Use a sugar replacement instead of sugar (avoid Aspartame).
7. Drink water instead of soft drinks.
8. When you eat out, avoid fried foods.
9. Walk or do similar exercises (e.g. Golf, Tennis) at least 20 minutes a day.

If you do even just a couple of these every day for the next month, you will feel much better and you will lose weight.

And if you are concerned about getting hungry all the time, or losing your energy, try taking a safe appetite suppressant, like Hoodia Balance. This supplement is South African Hoodia from the Kalahari Desert, which makes it more effective. This type is a non-prescription medication and has been tested for years to be safe for most people. It can control your appetite, yet increase your metabolism and energy.

However, do not take any herbal supplement without checking with your Doctor first, if you are on any prescription medications, due to possible interactions between the two, or if you have a special medical condition.

If you follow these simple steps, you will surely reach your weight loss goals and become a much happier, healthier, and oh yes, lighter person.
